Search for paragliding in India and two names come up again and again: Bir Billing in Himachal Pradesh and Kamshet in Maharashtra. One is a Himalayan flying mecca that hosts the Paragliding World Cup; the other is a Sahyadri hill town an hour from Pune where many visitors from Pune and Mumbai take their very first tandem flight.
We run flights at Kamshet, so we have an obvious interest — but we also know that the right answer depends on where you live, how much time you have and what kind of flight you are after. Here is an honest comparison of the two, factor by factor.
Quick verdict
If you have three or four days to spare, want to soar for 20 to 30 minutes at Himalayan altitude and do not mind a long road journey, Bir Billing is the more spectacular flight. If you live in or near Pune, Mumbai or Lonavala and want a safe, affordable, certified tandem flight you can finish before lunch, Kamshet is the sensible pick — and for most first-timers it is the better one.
The two sites are not really competitors. Bir Billing is a destination you travel to; Kamshet is an adventure you slot into a weekend. Plenty of people do Kamshet first, discover they love flying, and plan Bir as a holiday later. The rest of this article explains the differences so you can decide which order suits you.

The flight experience: how different does it feel?
Kamshet
Kamshet flights are launched from low Sahyadri hills — Tower Hill for higher, longer flights and Shelar Hill for gentle instructional launches — and land on flat farmland below. You are typically 800 to 1,500 feet above the ground, low enough to see farmers, bullock carts and the texture of the fields, high enough for Pawna Lake and the forts of Lohagad and Tikona to spread out on the horizon. In winter the air is smooth and the Joy Tandem feels like a slow glide; in summer thermals add lift and a bit of bounce. Choose the Acro Tandem and the pilot adds spirals, wing-overs and dives.
Bir Billing
Bir Billing is a big-mountain site. Launching from Billing at around 2,400 m and landing at Bir near 1,500 m gives pilots a lot of height to play with, so tandem flights commonly run 15 to 30 minutes and cover real distance along the Dhauladhar ridge. The scale is Himalayan: snow-capped peaks, deep valleys, the Kangra plains far below. It regularly hosts the Paragliding World Cup for exactly this reason. The trade-off is altitude chill, a bumpier ride in strong conditions and a longer walk to the take-off.
In short: Bir gives you more minutes and more drama; Kamshet gives you a gentler, closer, more intimate flight that is ideal for discovering whether you like paragliding at all.
Cost of the whole trip, not just the flight
Ticket prices at the two sites overlap, so the real cost difference is everything around the flight. Take a couple from Pune as an example.
Kamshet day trip for two (weekday)

Bir Billing trip for two
- Tandem flights roughly ₹2,500–₹4,500 each, with photos or video often charged separately
- Travel from Pune or Mumbai to Delhi or Chandigarh, then 12–14 hours by road to Bir
- At least two, usually three, nights of accommodation
- Meals, local transport, and a buffer day in case the weather grounds flying
Even on a tight budget the Bir trip is several times the cost of a Kamshet day, because you are paying for a holiday, not a flight. That is perfectly reasonable if a Himalayan holiday is what you want — just be honest about which one you are buying.
Time needed: half a day versus half a week
This is where the two places differ most. At Kamshet the entire on-site experience — briefing, jeep ride up the hill, flight and return to the meeting point — takes about two hours. Add the drive from Pune and you are done in half a day. Our team calls the evening before with a reporting time (around 7:00 am in winter, around 2:30 pm in summer), you meet us near Hotel Rangoli at Kamshet junction, and you are back in Pune for lunch or dinner.
Bir Billing needs at least a long weekend. Getting there from Delhi alone is 12 to 14 hours by road, and from Pune or Mumbai you add a flight or train to the north first. Sensible itineraries budget three or four days, and experienced visitors keep one spare day because mountain weather can shut down flying without notice.
If leave is scarce, Kamshet wins outright. If you are planning a proper holiday anyway, the time cost of Bir is simply part of the trip.
Weather reliability and safety
Both sites are weather-dependent — no reputable operator anywhere flies in rain, strong wind or poor visibility. The difference is what happens to your plans when a day is lost.
- Kamshet: from October to May the wind pattern is predictable — smooth winter mornings, thermic summer afternoons. If a slot is cancelled you reschedule or take a full refund, and because you live an hour or two away, coming back another weekend is easy.
- Bir Billing: Himalayan weather is more variable, and a lost day is expensive because you have travelled so far. Peak windows (October–November and March–May) are chosen partly to reduce this risk.
Pilot certification
Wherever you fly, ask about licences. At Sunrise Paragliding Kamshet every pilot holds an APPI, BHPA or PAI licence. Our lead pilot Ganesh Shinde is APPI Pro Tandem certified, trained under Mathieu Abrard at Misty Fly, and holds Advanced SIV and First Aid certifications. Flights run in daylight only, the take-off site is chosen each day for the wind, and we do not launch outside safe limits. Bir has many well-regarded operators too; the same questions apply.

- Have flown tandem before and are chasing a bigger experience
- Are interested in learning to fly cross-country or watching competition pilots

Can you do both? Absolutely
The most satisfying answer to "Kamshet or Bir Billing?" is often "Kamshet now, Bir later." A tandem at Kamshet costs little in time or money and tells you quickly whether you enjoy being in the air. If you do, you can plan a Bir trip with confidence, knowing what a launch feels like, how to sit in the harness and how your stomach handles turns. If you discover that ten minutes is plenty, you have saved yourself a very long drive.
To be fair to both places: Bir Billing is the better destination for long, high-altitude flights if you have days to spare. Kamshet is the better choice for a safe, affordable first tandem within a day from Pune or Mumbai.
